What to wear as an Expat in Dubai
Looking back to when I was packing for our move to Dubai, I think I had in my head that I was going on a permanent holiday! My case was was full of shorts, tank tops, bikinis, flip flops and basket bags. I moved in March and of course was not yet used to the heat but the bigger issue was how FREEZING I was everywhere. Why? I had not prepared for the intense Dubai air conditioning in every single building.
The image I had in my mind about fashion in Dubai was very different to how I now dress. I had an expectation of everyone being ultra glam all of the time and in reality, this is not the case. Although, there are definitely plenty of opportunities to dress up! Despite my initial plans, I actually now spend the majority of my time in workout/lounge wear with a linen shirt on top worn open. I am loving more natural fabrics and light layers instead.
I can tell you right now - jumpers and knits definitely still have their place in Dubai! I do miss my knits and cashmere from the UK but the Dubai Winters do still drop in temperature. Granted, it does not get as cold as many other countries in the Winter but, it does drop and you will definitely get the opportunity to bring out the ‘Winter’ clothes come December/January.
The milder temperatures do have a bonus thought, even in the Winter months. You can enjoy wearing your knitted dresses and thigh boots etc without the need to layer up with tights which can sometimes ruin the look!
My recommendation of what to pack when you’re moving to Dubai:
Yes, bring your shorts and tank tops but also pack your linen shirts and light knits for your arms in the malls as it does get cold.
In reality, holiday wear, shorts, tanks, etc are pretty inexpensive and can be purchased anywhere in the world. In reality, and especially as you’ll be limited in space, prioritise your more expensive knits, cashmere and denim to come with you. These are the wardrobe staples that you don’t want to have to buy again.
Your current wardrobe most likely won't ‘fit’ your new life in Dubai perfectly so be prepared for a period of adjustment. If you are new to Dubai and want some help with re-working your current wardrobe and adding some Dubai-appropriate staples, please do get in touch for a consultation.
